Rafael is best known for their role as Sam Jones on the reboot of the TV show Dynasty.
Hugh, 33, explained that while their family and friends were aware of the marriage, they chose to keep it a secret from the public.
They explained to Jess Rowe that “most people” should be entitled to such privacy.
Fans were sent into a frenzy in 2019, when Hugh commented on Rafael’s instagram post with the comment, “I do,” followed by an engagement ring emoji.
The engagement and subsequent marriage was not confirmed at that time.
Rafael lived with Hugh in Australia for at least some of their marriage and previously told The Daily Telegraph that he had “two Aussie boyfriends on TV.”
Hugh was previously in a highly publicised relationship with Kurt Roberts. The pair were engaged in 2021 but sadly called off their relationship in November that year.
Explaining that it wouldn’t have felt right to not wish Kurt a happy birthday, Hugh wrote a long tribute where he detailed his gratitude for Kurt throughout a difficult year, and explained that they were no longer together.
“In retrospect, having a first public relationship, that public, that fast, might’ve been too much pressure on us,” they wrote in the post.
“Maybe it was COVID or quarantines or us working too hard (I take the blame for full responsibility for the working hours), maybe it’s dad’s death or all the above,” they noted.
“The point is Kurt is incredibly kind, someone who is earnestly caring and helped me through a very tough time.”
Hugh and Kurt were together for just over a year, and engaged for three months, with Hugh apparently proposing while the pair were just hanging out on the couch at home.
It occurred amid a dark time for Hugh, which they detailed in the post as well.
“As you know, a year ago I came out as a human, two weeks later got cancelled, then in the darkness found light in Kurt,” the Packed to the Rafters actor wrote.
“Kurt is incredibly kind, someone who is earnestly caring and helped me through a very tough time.”
Hugh came out as non-binary in June last year when they appeared on the cover of DNA magazine.
