Miranda Kerr’s nude photographs don’t have to be explicit to cause controversy though.
While the likes of Beyonce, media saturating Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Moss and other representatives of femininity of an Australian beauty icon aren’t afraid to bare their bodies for the camera, fully nude shots are not unequivocally accepted in the public.
Where Givenchy, Versace, and Roberto Cavalli design barely there outfits, fully nude photos are the only way for models to take the next step to show a total lack of fear.
1. Miranda Kerr poses naked for a magazine cover
That's why in 2016 when Miranda posed nude for Harper’s Bazaar photo shoot with Steven Chee, it set off a chain reaction
The 32-year-old was set to make waves with a photo taken at the London West Hollywood hotel in Los Angeles. Although Bazaar's editor determined that the nude photo, with Kerr only wearing a pair of Louboutins, was classy, praising Kerr's confidence in the editor's letter, the public reaction was not exactly shared.
The depiction of this Victoria's Secret model in a nude cover rivalled the racy Playboy centrefolds. Miranda Kerr’s feature on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Australia resulted in controversy that ended up with the magazine being removed from supermarket shelves.
It depicted a nude Kerr under the line “what lies beneath”. Chief Kellie Hush, Harper's Bazaar's editor-in-chief, expressed disappointment that the image was regarded as being inappropriate, rather than natural beauty.
Despite all the controversy, the funny thing is that Miranda Kerr was not actually nude for the shoot. The g-string was photoshopped out of the image.
2. Miranda Kerr nude and pregnant
Miranda Kerr is a regular in Vogue magazine. In 2011 she posed nude while six months pregnant with her first child with then husband Orlando Bloom. Her confident body image is displayed proudly in the depiction of motherhood. The shoots seemed to cement the notion that Miranda Kerr is someone who is unequivocally comfortable in her own skin.
The cover shoot took advantage of this daring woman to once again make history, assigning Miranda Kerr as Vogue Australia's first pregnant model to be featured on the cover. Inside the fashion magazine, she strategically placed her arms across her otherwise bare body, 20 years after Demi Moore famously posed for nude pregnancy shots for Vanity Fair.
3. Miranda Kerr strips down for Pirelli Calendar
The Pirelli calendar is a limited publication featuring glamour shots that reflect the particular era of time passing. In 2014 the magazine celebrated with a 50th anniversary publication. The Miranda Kerr Pirelli calendar featured a line up of famous women posing in scant amounts of clothing.
4. Miranda Kerr goes topless on Instagram
Miranda Kerr is no stranger to topless photos. In 2014 she shared a famous Instagram snap, not long after her breakup from husband Orlando Bloom.
Her ease at freely sharing her own image was taken as an announcement to the world that she was happy with how her life was progressing. Her next relationship blossomed in 2015 when Miranda Kerr began dating Snapchat co-founder/CEO, Evan Spiegel. The pair wed in 2017.
While it is clear that nude photos create their share of controversy in public, there is the contrasting view that tastefully done, such images are a positive celebration of beauty.
Nude images can depict crass, brazen lust, or evoke a tender appreciation for natural beauty. Whether you think any of these images cross the line, it is clear that Miranda Kerr is quite content to explore those boundaries.
