What is Big Little Lies about?
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
At the very beginning of the pilot episode, it’s revealed that someone has been murdered at a school fundraiser, but neither the victim nor the culprit is revealed at the time.
We go on to meet the families of six first graders as they begin their first day at school, but when one of the children accuses another of bullying, a whole chain of distressing events is set off.
As the series progresses, we learn more about Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata and Bonnie, known as ‘The Monterey Five’, who eventually bear witness to the murder foretold at the beginning of the series.
Who stars in Big Little Lies?
Originally, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon optioned the screen rights for Liane Moriarty’s novel less than a month after its release and came on as executive producers while also starring in the show.
Reese portrays the ‘alpha female’ in town, Madeline Mackenzie, while Nicole plays Celeste Wright, a beautiful ex-lawyer with a seemingly perfect husband and young twin boys.
Zoe Kravitz also starred in the series as Bonnie, the new wife of Madeline’s ex-husband, while Shailene Woodley starred as Jane, a young mother who is new to town. The five was rounded out by Laura Dern in the role of Renata Klein, whose daughter is the victim of bullying.
The second season also saw the addition of Meryl Streep to the cast, and we can’t possibly imagine a more powerhouse group of women in the one show.
