Matt's wife Alyse insists there was no offence meant. "It's actually supposed to be like, 'Congratulations, you've bagged yourself a hottie,'" she says. "That's the way we view it."
But in the moment, Della and her teammate, indigenous healthcare worker Tully, reacted with surprise. "We were like, 'Oh, Matt, we can't believe you said that!" Della says. "You just said that on national television!'
Looking over at Amy, Della adds, "Amy did seem a bit hurt."
In an interview to camera on the show, Amy says, "I didn't appreciate that comment at all. I was, like, seething. That really shows Matt's true colours."
It also shows Josh's, Della says, as afterward, Josh added, "'Oh, she's fine. Amy knows that she's the brains and I'm the beauty in this relationship,' and we were like, 'Oh, no!'" Agrees Tully with a laugh, "It went from worse to the baddest thing ever!"
Sisters Kelsey and Amanda, who were cooking when the comment was uttered, did not hear what was said until the next Instant Restaurant. "I still can't believe he said that," says Kelsey. "I don't know what was going through his mind at the time."
While Josh and Amy have declined to speak to WHO for this story, Josh indicated on air he was not ruffled by Alyse and Matt's remarks, saying, "Alyse and Matt are quite superficial people, really.”
Yet Alyse says her husband isn't the only one with a dry sense of humour. "If Amy was offended by what we said," she asserts, "then oh, geez, she must be constantly offended by her own husband!"
My Kitchen Rules airs tonight at 7.30 PM on Channel 7.
