But after their equipment and their communication broke down in the kitchen, and all their recipes and techniques seemed to fail them, Josh and Amy knew their food would get poor feedback. "I just want to apologise to everybody," Josh said after their main was served. "I just am genuinely ashamed."
The experience proved illuminating for their fellow Group Two contestants. “We started to see cracks happening and it was really uncomfortable,” says Tully. Her teammate Della adds, “Josh looked pretty devastated about serving that food after the talk that they had. I think they were both inconsolable.”
Could the couple, and Josh in particular, have been spooked by the table talk they had been dishing at previous restaurants? “I think Josh likes a challenge and he likes to have a constructive conversation,” says Tully. “I think that’s his plan, to rattle people’s cages.”
Others are more blunt. “I think he’s a genuine a**hole,” says Court. “I have a soft voice and he found it very easy to speak over me or put me down. People were like, ‘Oh, it’s Josh being Josh,’ and I was like, ‘No. This is either acceptable behaviour or this is not acceptable behaviour.”
While Josh, who had boasted, “In the kitchen, I’m the boss,” called Alyse “superficial” and proclaimed, “I’m a little intimidated by Della but not Tully,” seemed to meet his comeuppance, the besties from Brisbane wish it didn't happen that way.
"We felt so bad," Della says. "After Tully's brilliant shell phone, and we're all taking the piss, out Amy came crying and we're like, 'Oh, we're so cruel,' because as much as Josh talks the talk, Tully and I are never ones to want to see someone fail."
Even so, "I don't know that 'humble' and 'Josh' go in the same sentence ever,' Tully says.
My Kitchen Rules resumes with Della and Tully's cook on Sunday at 7 PM on Channel 7.
