In a statement released today, Senator Peris said, "It is my intention that I will serve out my term and fully support and endorse my replacement for the number one position on the Labor Senate ticket, whoever that might be."
Former Northern Territory government minister Malarndirri McCarthy has since expressed a desire to fill the place vacated by Ms. Peris. The journalist also offered her support to departing Senator as she embarks on the next stage of her career.
Senator Peris made mention that she never envisaged herself “becoming a career politician".
Reflecting on her time in parliament, Nova, 45 said, "As a champion of change I will continue to fight racism and prejudice”.
It has been widely reported that the former athlete will now consider a role with the AFL with a particular focus on Indigenous Affairs.
Ms. Peris won a gold medal with the Australian Women's Hockey Team in Atlanta in 1996 and also participated in the 4 x 400 relay finalist team at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
