It’s estimated that globally, one in four pregnancies will end in miscarriage.

This means that the experience is somewhat common, and something that many mothers and fathers-to-be will have to face in their journey to become parents.

Celebrities and public figures are far from exempt from this situation, and many have spoken out about the difficulty of losing a baby.

Here are celebrities who have been candid about their experiences with pregnancy loss and miscarriage.

Winner of the fifth season of Th Bachelor, Laura Byrne, has spoken openly about experiencing two miscarriages with fiance Matty J.

The jewellery designer, who is now engaged to Bachelor Matthew Johnson, suffered losses both before the birth of both of her daughters, Marlie Mae and Lola.

The first one, which occurred in 2018, was discussed widely by Laura.

"The week that followed was downright miserable for both of us. It seemed like every time I opened my phone people were announcing their beautiful pregnancies,” she revealed at the time.

“All I could think was 'why is this happening to us?' I didn't know anyone who had experienced miscarriage before. I couldn't shake the guilt that maybe I had done something wrong, or worse that there was something wrong with me,” she explained.

After the birth of Marlie Mae, Laura unfortunately experienced another miscarriage.

“Just two months ago, Matt and I went through our second miscarriage and that still feels raw and very bizarre to even say out loud,” she said on her podcast, Life Uncut.

“It’s not something I’ve really spoken about, not something that I’ve talked to many people about, but I feel very, very passionately that miscarriage is a conversation that needs to be had in an open forum.”

Supermodel Megan Gale and her  former AFL player partner Shaun Hampson has also faced the devastation of miscarriage, experiencing the loss in between the birth of her two children, River and Rosie.

After a six-week scan, she explained that she felt there was an issue, but didn’t quite know what it was.

"I can't put my finger on it. There was no physical change or a sign or symptom."

Her obstetrician confirmed a few weeks later that she had lost the baby.

“He just said, ‘I’m so sorry, it’s gone’.”

Megan was working on Australia’s Next Top Model at the time, and decided to continue that commitment, which meant flying to Milan to film.

"There have been plenty of times in my life I've had to suck things up — but this was the most challenging time I've had to do that," she said.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, famously wrote about her miscarriage in an poignant opinion piece for The New York Times. She described the physical experience in detail, which she experienced while with her son, Archie.

“I felt a sharp cramp.I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right,” Meghan, who is married to Prince Harry penned.

“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.”

The article went on to detail just how common miscarriage is among women, and encouraged individuals to check in on each other regarding pregnancy loss.

Since that loss, Meghan has gone on to have a daughter, Lilibet Diana.

Model and business owner Jennifer Hawkins has spoken openly on the topic of pregnancy loss, and has detailed how hard the experience was for her and her husband Jake Wall when she suffered a miscarriage in 2018.

“Last year was such a tough year for Jake and me. It was the toughest year of our lives," Jen told Stellar magazine.

"I felt like I almost broke and, in fact, it's still really raw. But Jake was amazing. He let me sit with the pain, feel it and not be OK.

She added: "I had so many years of planning, but the one thing I so dearly wanted couldn't be planned. Everything crumbled. With women, we want everything to be OK, but sometimes it's just not."

Luckily, Jen went on to give birth to a daughter, Frankie Violet, a year later. She has since fallen pregnant again with a baby boy, due in October 2021.

US model and influencer, Chrissy Tiegen, publicly shared her pregnancy loss in October last year. Her son, who she named Jack, passed away at 20 weeks.

“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,” she wrote on Instagram alongside pictures of herself in hospital with her husband, singer John Legend.

The couple are parents to children Luna and Miles, and after that experience with loss, Chrissy has confirmed she will never be pregnant again.

Television presenter and reporter Georgie Gardner has also opened up about her struggles to have a third child.

She is mum to Bronte and Angus, who are both in their early teens, but experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage after their births.

"Some women I know have miscarriages and are very accepting and say that's OK, that's nature taking its course but, my god, it really took me to a very deep and dark place actually," she said.

"I think there are a lot of women and men walking around feeling a real ache in their heart about losing babies, I really do."
