"We're finally out of debt": Survivor's Luke shuts down GoFundMe page

After fans donate $550,000 to support his family - by Nadia Elshawarby
  • 23 Sep 2019

Australian Survivor’s Luke Toki revealed last week that he was overwhelmed by fan’s generous donations after a GoFundMe page was set up following his devastating eviction from the competition.

However, over the weekend, the father of three sensationally requested that the page – which was set up by Survivor fan David Skow – be shut down. At the time of the page’s closure, over $550,000 had been raised.

And now, Luke has opened up about the reason for his decision.

After briefly announcing the news via his Instagram account, Luke opened up to WA’s Sunday Times, explaining that he didn't "want to take anything more" after seeing how much had been raised.

"You get people saying they are waiting to be paid so they can donate," he said, adding that he'd grown up "living pay cheque to pay cheque".

Hey guys abit of a explanation why I decided to stop the go fund me. I hope everyone understands 💜 Thankyou again as i try to reply to everyone. #muchlove https://www.pressreader.com/australia/the-sunday-times-9029/20190922/283901639686361 @sundaytimes

"It speaks volumes about the kindness of these people who are donating. They have their own goals and their own bills, so they need to look after themselves."

Luke was open from the start about his motivation behind joining Survivor for a second time, (he previously took part in 2017) explaining he was hoping to win the $500,000 prize money to help his family.

The reality star’s sons Nate and Lennox are both on the autism spectrum and require therapy sessions and his newborn daughter Madeleine was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis just weeks before he left for Fiji.

Thank you everyone for donating to the go fund me page, it means the 🌏 to us. It has since been closed for donations for us BUT We have been made aware that some people never had the chance to donate and if they still would like to, here is a link to our chosen charity - https://www.telethonkids.org.au/make-a-donation/cystic-fibrosis "Care Today, Cure Tomorrow" is a collaboration between Cystic Fibrosis WA and Telethon Kids Institute. It provides services to kids and families with CF and also research to discover better treatments and a cure 💖💖 The KING OF THE JUNGLE 🌴 Thanks you 👑 #yeahboy 🤙 @cysticfibrosiswa @telethon_kids

Following his request for the GoFundMe page to be shut down, Luke has revealed he will be donating the excess money – which totals around $50,000 to charity. He has also urged fans who still wish to send money to donate to to 'Care Today, Cure Tomorrow', a collaboration between Cystic Fibrosis WA and Telethon Kids Institute.
