There’s a reason it’s been just over five years since the Canadian chart-topper’s last album, 2013’s self-titled set – Avril Lavigne was diagnosed with Lyme disease in late 2014 and spent two years bedridden as she battled the affliction that nearly killed her.
That fight courses through her sixth album, Head Above Water, which resonates with the triumphant energy of someone who has been to Hell and come out the other side. Vocally, the 34-year-old has never sounded better.
