Bump
PSA: You only have a few days left to catch up on season one of Bump before the much-anticipated season two drops on Boxing Day. Bump follows the journey of Oly, an ambitious high school student who unknowingly falls pregnant and gives birth as a teenager, throwing her into the world of parenting while she attempts to finish high school. This wholesome show stars the likes of Claudia Karvan and Angus Sampson, giving it a great factor of familiarity, and also had one of the most-watched premieres on Stan ever.
The Mindy Project
If you’re after a little bit more of a throwback on your break, The Mindy Project is the perfect choice. Mindy Kaling’s show was a romantic-comedy series that ran for six seasons, so you’ll have a whole backlog of episodes to keep you busy. Following the life of gynaecologist Mindy Lahiri (played by Mindy Kaling herself), as she navigates the balance of her personal and professional life. If you’ve never seen The Mindy Project (first of all, why?), the fact that Mindy Kaling wrote a lot of episodes of The Office might give you a little bit of an insight into the comedy you can expect from her show.
Yellowstone
Switching it up to a drama, Yellowstone is an American drama following conflict along the shared borders of a cattle ranch, a Native reservation, and land developers. Enriched by the drama among the Dutton family, we’re treated to the acting prowess of Kevin Costner, who stars as the show’s main character: John Dutton, sixth generation patriarch of the Dutton family, who own and inhabit the cattle ranch. The show’s fourth season premiered last month, bringing us up to a total of 37 episodes to binge over your break.
Love Life
The first season of Love Life followed Darby Carter, played by Anna Kendrick, as she found her first love, and had relationship after relationship leading up to her last love. Since then, the series has become an anthology, following the same concept but with a new cast of characters introduced. The recently-debuted second season follows Marcus Watkins, played by the delightful William Jackson Harper (also recognisable from his role as Chidi in The Good Place) in his quest for his final love.
Younger
This seven-season series is another good bingeing option, featuring episodes that mostly run for about 20-30 minutes. Younger, now finished, followed the life of Liza Miller, a 40-year-old divorcee who fakes she’s a 20-something in order to re-enter the ageist publishing industry. The series was created by Darren Star, best known for his work on Sex and the City and Emily in Paris, and if those two shows are anything to go by, you can expect Younger to be both fun and light-hearted.
The Great
This period comedy follows the rise to power of Catherine the Great, played by a super-talented Elle Fanning. She’s joined by the ever-adorable Nicholas Hoult, who plays Catherine’s dangerous – yet stupid – husband, Emperor Peter III. The end of season one saw Catherine begin a coup against Peter, and the second season – which launched in November, will see her carry it through. Although the series is somewhat ‘historical’, the satire laced throughout makes it a pretty hilarious watch.
One of Us is Lying
Based on the popular teen novel of the same name, One of Us is Lying borrows the concept of the 1980s film The Breakfast Club, with five strangers walking into detention together. However, this updated version sees only four leave. While the four remaining students all have their reasons to be named suspects, one of them is – you guessed it – lying. Although based on a book for teens, the series creates an enticing mystery for any age.
Sign up to Stan to enjoy all or any of these series this Christmas.
