No matter whether you’re a 'natural' or a 'bottle', keeping your locks happy and healthy is no easy feat. That’s why we’ve employed the help of celebrity hairstylist and Fudge ambassador Shannon Williams to share his tips, tricks, and favourite products for brighter strands.

Cool water is key

Although we love a relaxing soak in the bath or a long shower, it turns out that hot water isn’t so kind to our locks. “Hot water can strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils, which in time can dry out your hair and cause the colour to fade,” explains Shannon. The next time you wash your hair, try rinsing with cold water as “the natural oils are preserved and the cuticles seal, conserving colour and keeping your hair hydrated, soft and shiny.”

The power of purple

If there’s one product you need to invest in, let it be a purple shampoo. Not only do they look stylish on our cabinets, but they also work like a charm for brightening blonde hair.

“Purple shampoos are toning shampoos that are designed to reduce brassiness. The cool violet pigments neutralise the unwanted yellows, keeping the blonde boosted and bright,” Shannon notes.

Give these purple shampoos a try!

How to hydrate

When it comes to restoring dry or damaged strands, Shannon recommends a home mask.

“When your hair needs reviving and hydration, I always recommend reaching for a deeply conditioning mask with ingredients and proteins that strengthen and treat. This helps prevent breakage, further damage and improve overall hair health.”

It's time to consider replacing your conditioner with a mask once a week.

L’Oreal Professionell Blondifier Masque, $34, from Adore Beauty

Morocanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, $64, from Morrocanoil

Try a toner

“Whether it’s a cooler white blonde or warmer honey blonde, the shampoo and products you use should be tailored to your hair’s undertones and needs,” Shannon explains.

That’s why leave-in toners are a must. These formulas revive cool hues and neutralise any brassiness.

Bumble and Bumble Blonde Tone Enhancing Leave-In, $28, from Mecca

IGK Mixed Feelings Leave-In Blonde Toning Drops, $44, from Adore Beauty

Color Wow Color Control Purple Toning and Styling Foam, $24, from Sephora

Breakage barrier

One of the biggest causes of dry and damaged hair is heat. Shannon advises minimising heat styling and prepping with a protectant.

“As much as we all love a blow-dry, constant heat tools can really shorten the life of your blonde if your hair isn’t prepped correctly. Hold off on heat styling when possible and always use a heat protectant or some sort of hair primer,” says Shannon.

GHD Bodyguard Heat Protectant, $30, from Adore Beauty

Hask 5-in-1 Leave-In-Spray, $9.59, from Priceline

Gisou Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray, $41, from Mecca

Aveda Heat Relief Thermal Protector and Conditioning Mist, $36, from Adore Beauty
