But Monday night’s episode of Bride and Prejudice saw tensions well and truly reach boiling point, just hours before the same-sex couple were due to tie the knot.
In a desperate last minute bid to win his approval, Chris offered his traditionalist father Geoff paid plane tickets to attend the wedding in California.
Along with his Jehovas Witness mother Yvonne, Geoff had previously rejected his invitation to the ceremony and outwardly expressed his dismay at the couple’s relationship.
“Maybe he’s had time to think about it,” an anxious Chris told the camera after arriving at the Palm Springs location.
“I guess we’ll see… it would be absolutely massive if my Dad turns up,” he said, as the pair were joined by Grant’s supportive parents who made a toast to the occasion.
Throughout the day the nervous groom’s trepidation only worsened as he held out hope that his dad would take him up on his offer.
“Weighing heavily on my mind was whether my parents were going to come,” he said, shaking off his nervous energy.
But on the morning of the wedding, his Aunt Alison and Uncle Barry delivered a bombshell about Geoff and Yvonne’s pending arrival.
“I thought we should give you the news now, so you’ve got time to adjust,” Alison warned as the show abruptly ended in a shock cliff-hanger.
