After a gut-wrenching confrontation with his estranged parents on last night’s episode of Bride & Prejudice: The Forbidden Weddings, one of the show’s participants is opening up about what went down—and what viewers still have yet to see.
“Nobody wants to see themselves cry on camera,” says Chris, 39, whose parents Geoff and Yvonne turned down an invite to his wedding with same-sex partner Grant, 32. “But it happens. I could have kept a stiff upper lip, but that would not have been genuine.”
Yvonne cited her religious beliefs—she is a Jehovah’s Witness, while Chris left the church 18 years ago—while Geoff has said he also does not approve of Chris’s life with Grant. Chris tells WHO their resistance was, in fact, the very reason they chose to tell their story on the hit Seven Network show.
“We wanted to help people with a similar story navigate their own situations,” says Chris. Grant adds that “We saw an opportunity to start dialogues across Australia about the battles our community faces. The homophobia and pain need to stop.”
Interestingly, Chris says his parents have met past flames, who have lunched with and even stayed inside their home. “The truth about who they were was unspoken, but they knew.” And he hints that Yvonne and Geoff may yet change their tune. “Things will come to light that change the situation significantly.”
