Caitlyn married Kris in 1991, one month after her divorce from her ex-husband, Robert Kardashian. The couple had been friends with Caitlyn prior to their marriage, and Kris had known her for quite some time.
By marrying Kris, Caitlyn gained four step-children – Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Rob Kardashian – who are all well-known for their work within the Kardashian franchise.
Caitlyn and Kris had another two daughters: Kendall Jenner, born in 1995, and Kylie Jenner, born in 1997. Both of the girls are still close with Caitlyn, despite the rift within the family.
Caitlyn came out as transgender in April of 2015, roughly a year after the separation, and announced her new name in July of that year.
Caitlyn’s step-children and children were supportive of the transition, however, a lot of issues seemed to brew in the family around the divorce between Kris and Caitlyn.
While promoting her book, The Secrets of My Life, in 2017, Caitlyn revealed she hadn’t spoken to Khloe in two years given Khloe’s sense of betrayal over Caitlyn’s words about Kris.
Kim also took issue with some of the claims Caitlyn made in the book, specifically that her father, who famously represented OJ Simpson when he stood trial for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, thought OJ was guilty and defended him anyway.
“It is so shady that Caitlyn came over and gave me the book, and then on the phone she said, ‘Well, the final version has a few more things in it. But don’t worry, it’s nothing about you’,” Kim explained on an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
“So, she lied to me. Because that is about me if it’s about our dad,” she said.
“I’ve always had Caitlyn’s back, but she is a liar. She is not a good person.”
Caitlyn has responded to their backlash, confirming to UK television personality Piers Morgan that she no longer spoke to the Kardashian side of the family.
“I don’t talk about that side of the family, I spent 23 years of my life with those kids – it’s difficult to talk about it, terribly, terribly sad,” she said.
“They don’t want me in their lives, they bashed me pretty badly. It’s devastating when your kids do that. It really hurt.”
