Five of the wackiest themed hotels in Tokyo

Allow your inner child to run wild - by Belinda Morris
  • 20 Apr 2018

Japan has always made us laugh with their hilarious game shows, bizarre vending machines and downright strange inventions - but lucky for us, it doesn’t stop there.

Tokyo’s hospitality industry has taken things to a whole new level, with a bunch of Japanese hotels (that out-Japan themselves with their quirkiness). Allow your inner child to run wild (cue natural desires), with five of the wackiest themed hotels in Tokyo.

Godzilla Themed Hotel

Hotel Gracery Shinjuku in Tokyo’s buzzing Shinjuku entertainment district, features a 12-metre tall Godzilla head (you know, for those avid fans).

The 920-room hotel also has six Godzilla-themed rooms, guarded by a human-sized replica of the lizard, a giant claw above the bed and is also packed with loads of movie memorabilia. This room will set you back about £200 on weekdays and £300 on weekends #rawwwr!

Hello Kitty Themed Hotel

Well, you had to know this one was coming! The Hello-Kitty themed Keio Plaza Hotel, in the Shinjuku neighborhood of Tokyo, is a pop art explosion of cuteness.

While the “Kitty Town” room is more suited for family-oriented guests, the “Princess Kitty” is more for romantic couples or those wanting to fulfill their princess dream. Both rooms are a shrine to Japan’s most loved cartoon characters (right down to the Hello Kitty breakfast, complete with branded omelet.)

Couples Capsule Hotel

Most capsule hotels have very strict rules (and keep male and female users separated on different floors) but the Kiba Hotel in Tokyo finally gives couples the chance to capsule together! This hotel offers a bit of extra space with a 24-hour sauna, enormous hot tub and communal lounge where guests can recover from their stay with a massage.

Library-Themed Hotel

Curling up with a good book has taken whole new meaning in the form of bookworm heaven. Book and Bed is a literature-lovers dream, allowing guests to sleep in true Japanese-style compartments that house around 1700 English and Japanese books.

While that may sound charming, beware that Book and Bed is definitely a hostel, not a hotel, and that the capsule-like sleeping quarters are only semi-private and for “accommodation,” as opposed to comfort.

Sci-Fi-Themed Hostel

With a somewhat kinky past, this former 80’s “love hotel” has done a lot to clean up its act. Khaosan World Asakusa is a hit with foreigners due to it’s traditional, weird but uplifting sci-fi-surrealist theme.

Minutes from the famous Tokyo Skytree, Sensoji Temple and Nakamise shopping street, Khaosan World has multiple dorms and is mega social and ideal if you are travelling alone.

The best part? A glass bottomed Jacuzzi in the Party Maisonette Room, allowing those in the room below to see your elegantly placed, um, socks.
