Prince Charles undertook the honour on behalf of his mother, Queen Elizabeth. While the "Shape Of You" singer was not made a “Sir” (or knight), so the official ceremony did not include the traditional sword tap on the shoulder.
Following the event, the 26-year-old told reporters that his grandfather was a fan of the monarchy and believed he would be proud of his grandson for receiving the astounding honour.
“Do you know what I love, my grandfather was a massive royalist, he had all the commemorative plates and stuff, and he died on this day four years ago, so it’s actually quite a nice full circle thing, I guess he’d be pretty proud,” he told reporters, according to PEOPLE.
The star also took to Instagram to share a snap with his badge of honour in hand and captioned the picture: "Honoured to be awarded an MBE today at Buckingham Palace x."
