Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski surprised everybody last year when she announced that she had gotten married to her boyfriend of a few weeks, Sebastian Bear-McClard. There were tons of critics and more than a few eyebrows raised.
But, sorry haters, the couple just celebrated their first wedding anniversary. Which Ratajkowski announced in the most EmRata way possible – by posting a topless photo on Instagram showing off her wedding bling.
In honour of one of the decade’s most shocking whirlwind romances, we’ve laid down everything you need to know about Emily Ratajkowski’s wedding.

The Happy Couple: Emily Ratajkowski And Sebastian Bear-McClard
Emily Ratajkowski first shot into stardom for appearing almost nude in the uncensored version of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” music video. Since then, she’s gone on to have a pretty successful modelling and acting career.
Although not a Victoria’s Secret model, she’s appeared in dozens of campaigns, on the runways for New York Fashion Week, and in films like 2014’s hit thriller Gone Girl. She also appeared in the Amy Schumer comedy I Feel Pretty and the Entourage film.
Although now famous for being Ratajkowski’s husband, Sebastian BearMcClard is a successful indie producer and actor in his own right. His films have been nominated for several awards, including the Independent Spirit Award in 2014 and a Best Feature Film nod from the Gotham Independent Film Awards. He’s currently working on a film with Jonah Hill and a remake of the ‘80s film 48 Hrs.
When news broke about their wedding, it was completely out of the blue. The pair had only been rumoured to be dating for a few weeks when they tied the knot. They first appeared in public together on February 14, 2018 – just over a week before their courthouse wedding. And Ratajkowski had just split from her boyfriend of four years, Jeff Magid, in early January.
This isn’t to say that the two were strangers before they married on impulse. In fact, they ran in the same social circles and were good friends. “We knew each other for a long time before and he likes to joke ‘yeah everyone thinks we got married quickly, but you vetted me for two years”, the actress shared.
Even with the shotgun wedding, the couple is going strong. They purchased a $USD 2-million ($AUD 2.88-million) house last April and were seen cuddling up to each other in Mexico earlier this year.
Ratajkowski’s DIY Wedding Bling
EmRata can now add “jewellery designer” to her portfolio. The 27-year-old actually designed her own engagement ring...mainly because Bear-McClard didn’t propose with one.
“He proposed to me at Minetta Tavern [in New York City], and he didn’t have a ring”, Ratajkowski told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “And then he took the paper clip that the bill was paid with and made me a ring, which I actually thought was really romantic.”
Ratajkowski debuted the self-designed ring almost half a year after they exchanged vows. It boasts two huge diamonds – one teardrop-shaped rock and a princess cut gem – set on a simple gold band. The ring was crafted by Alison Chemla, the designer behind Alison Lou.
The couple also DIYed their wedding bands. After they applied for a wedding license, Bear-McClard and Ratajkowski bought an ounce of gold in Chinatown. They had someone melt and hammer it down into matching wedding bands.
Emily Ratajkowski’s Wedding
The wedding was just as unconventional as Ratajkowski’s engagement. She eschewed the usual grand celebrity wedding for a toned-down, intimate ceremony at city hall on February 23, 2018.
Only a handful of close friends were invited, including social media star and internet sensation Josh Ostrovsky (a.k.a. The Fat Jew), who is one of Bear-McClard’s closest friends.
During Vanity Fair’s “In the Limelight” podcast, Ratajkowski explained why they kept the guest list short and sweet: “We decided we were going to get married in January and then were kind of waiting for the right moment. It’s one of those things [where] you have to choose one witness and we couldn’t just choose one of our friends, so then we were like, which friends can be there? I can’t even imagine what having a 300-person wedding is like because it still felt kind of hectic to plan ours.”
In another twist, Ratajkowski decided to do away with the traditional white wedding dress and opted for a chic yellow Zara suit instead. “I never loved the idea of wearing white for a wedding because I'm not a pure woman. I'm a woman with a lot of character and experience and life”, said the model, about her unorthodox choice of outfit. “I also just loved the idea of a suit, especially at City Hall because it's like you're taking care of business.”
Ratajkowski announced the wedding on the same day, but not really by choice. The original plan was to keep the wedding a secret – even going as far as getting Ostrovsky to be a decoy – to keep the paparazzi out of her special day.
But just a few hours after the ceremony, Ratajkowski was forced to break the story before the press did. She FaceTimed her parents (yes, they weren’t at the wedding) before posting a story on Instagram, shocking millions of fans in the process.
The happy newlyweds had their honeymoon in a luxurious desert resort in Utah called Amangiri. Even though the wedding was hush-hush, Ratajkowski wasn’t shy about posting her honeymoon photos – including some tasteful semi-nudes that her new husband took.
Emily Ratajkowski and Sebastian Bear-McClard’s love story may be unconventional. But when did Ratajkowski ever do anything conventionally? And despite the odds (and all of the relationship’s critics), the couple seems happier than ever.
