Amy Schumer might have a wicked sense of humour, but she wasn’t laughing when her mother pointed out her son’s name sounded like “genital”!

Just 11 months after welcoming her first child with husband Chris Fisher, Amy revealed on the latest episode of her Spotify podcast— Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith— that they’d agreed to finally switch it up.

“So do you guys know that Gene, our baby’s name is officially changed?” she asked her listeners. “It’s now Gene David Fischer. It was Gene Attell Fischer but we realised that we by accident named our son, ‘genital.'”

Her guest and longtime friend Claudia O’Doherty— who appeared in Amy’s first movie, ‘Trainwreck’— chimed in, saying: “My mum pointed that out to me actually. My mum was like, ‘Amy’s called her son genital.’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And then, she was right.”

This silly blunder aside, the actress and stand up comedian has been extremely open and honest about the highs and lows of motherhood, keeping it real, raw and unfiltered every step of the way.

“I really have had a beautiful experience having a baby,” she told Oprah Winfrey in January while appearing as a special guest on Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life In Focus Tour.

“You know, it’s different for everybody. But I really have to recommend if you’ve got the resources to have a baby, have a baby. It’s been so life-changing for me. And I really like the guy.”

After an extremely difficult pregnancy in which she suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum— a form of acute morning sickness— Amy said becoming a mother made her realise how incredibly strong women are.

“We are warriors. All of us. I mean, for real. That is what I learned,” she continued. “I didn’t just learn how strong I was. I really learned, as a whole, how strong women are. And, you know, men are great, too. And, like, that’s awesome and you guys can throw a touch down. But, like, can you make a baby?”

The 38-year-old has since confirmed she’s started IVF.

“I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional,” she wrote in a candid Instagram post alongside a photo showing her bruised stomach from all the hormone injections.

If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do. My number is in my bio. We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling.”

Then, in April, she updated fans on her progress, revealing the results of her first egg retrieval were successful.

“They retrieved 35 eggs from me. Not bad for the old gal right? Then 26 fertilized! Whoa right? For all those we got 1 normal embryo from that and 2 low level mosaic (mosaic means there are some abnormal cells but can still lead to a healthy baby) So we feel lucky we got 1,” she told her Instagram followers.

“So many women go through many rounds of ivf which is painful and mentally gruelling. I heard from hundreds of women about my their miscarriages and struggles and also many hopeful stories about how after rounds and rounds of ivf it worked!! It has been really encouraging. Thank you. Anyway, I am so grateful for our son and that we have the resources to get help in this way.”
