Confirmed! Former Gogglebox stars Angie and Yvie have accepted a lucrative offer to appear on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Outta Here – with the duo confessing money and a restrictive contract were major reasons why they left the show that made them famous.
The stars, who announced they were departing Gogglebox last year, along with fellow fan favourites Wayne and Tom, at the time blamed the rigours of travel for their decision, as Angie had recently moved to Brisbane.
‘We wanted to let everyone know the reason we left is because Angie doesn’t live in Sydney anymore,’ Yvie said.
However there has never been any secret about the hilarious pair wanting to also do other things, with Angie previously revealing, ‘We wanted to spread our wings but that doesn’t mean we don’t love Gogglebox. Because we do. There’s no hard feelings there.’
But the demands placed on them by the notoriously poorly-paid show were a major factor, and now they’re out, the pair are grabbing at some very big opportunities. First on their list is Celeb.
‘I am a massive fan of watching celebrities do absurd things in the jungle but I never thought I would be one of those people doing it,’ Angie said in a statement released by Ten. ‘I cannot wait to get up close and personal with Lady JMO and Dr Chris!’
Adds Yvie: “I cannot believe we have spent four seasons watching, laughing and commentating on this show from inside our living room and now we will be the ones being laughed at!’
Talking about their departure from Gogglebox, Angie and Yvie are not mincing their words as they head into the South African jungle.
‘We couldn’t do other things, and after four years it was time to see what else was out there,’ Angie told TV Week, with Yvie adding, ‘Leaving was a huge gamble, but we just weren’t earning any money.’
However, Yvie clarifies the pair left the show before they got the offer to do Celeb – a phone call she says left them ‘so excited.’
When Angie and Yvie recently spoke to WHO’s TV podcast, Binge List, they revealed Gogglebox had had a major impact on their lives.
When men say, “Where do I know you from?”, I go, do you watch porn?’ revealed Yvie. ‘Well that’s where you know me from!’
But it hasn’t all been fun and games. One comment left Angie in hot water, and unhappy with Gogglebox bosses for letting it go to air. Describing comedian Dave Hughes as ‘one of the ugliest people I’ve ever seen’, the moment angered Hughes enough that he struck back with his own very unpleasant label for the star.
Speaking on the matter, Angie told Binge List she was upset with herself for making the unkind jibe, for which she has publicly apologised.
‘I made a dreadful mistake that keeps being brought up,’ she said, when asked on the podcast if she’d said anything on the show she now regrets.
‘I’m surprised you haven’t just thrown it in my face right now. I called someone something that I shouldn’t have. And that upset me, but I apologise and I know never to use the word ugly again.
‘We’ve been really lucky except for that one incident. And then everything else is usually so fun and light-hearted.’
