In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show airing Tuesday, Hathaway shared that although she’s usually intimidated at the gym, giving birth to son Jonathan Rosebanks eight weeks ago has given her a new appreciation for her body.
“I work out in West Hollywood, so you see, like, Thor’s trainer — you know, the people who have too many muscles to be in The Avengers — so I would normally walk in and feel so intimidated,” she says. “But [now] I walk in, I’m like, ‘Yeah I work out with 5 lb. weights, but I pushed a baby out of my body, I feel good right now.’ ”
During a recent workout, however, the 33-year-old didn’t exactly “wow” her fellow gym-goers — especially one in particular, who kept staring at her as she worked out.
“He comes up to me. He’s like, ‘So you been working out at this gym a long time?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh my God, he’s hitting on me. Nice, new mom.’ I feel really good about myself and I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve been coming here for a little bit,’ ” she says.
“He’s like, ‘Cool, I’m a trainer here and just wondering if you want some pointers,’ ” Hathaway shares. “And I’m like, ‘Oh no, he’s not hitting on you, he just wants a job!’ ”
The Oscar winner said she then decided to drop the fact that she’s a new mom, assuming she’s about to receive a nice compliment about her post-baby body.
“I’m expecting him to say the thing that you say when someone says they’ve had a baby,” she explains, “which is, ‘Oh my god, you look great!’ ”
Hathaway continues “Doesn’t matter if it’s true. If somebody says, ‘I had a baby 13 years ago,’ you say, ‘You look great.’ That is what you do, that is the etiquette.
“So I say to this guy, ‘I had a baby seven weeks ago,’ ” Hathaway says. “And he goes, ‘Oh, trying to lose the baby weight!’ ”
