In a matter of months, Alex Nation and Maegan Luxa went from being AFL teammates to a romantic couple who were ready to go public with their relationship. However, after announcing their engagement in December 2017, the pair split shortly afterwards.
Now, after much speculation as to why the seemingly loved-up duo ended things so suddenly, the former Bachelor star— who rose to fame after winning Richie Strahan’s heart in 2016— has revealed the real reason why she called off her engagement to her fiance.

Doing the press rounds ahead of her appearance on season two of Bachelor In Paradise, Alex stopped by Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa where she spoke candidly about her fractured relationship with Meagan, admitting that despite her love for the footballer, she needed more time to explore her sexuality. Becasue of this, Alex says their split was inevitable.
“I remember rocking up to my first football training and there was something about her that was so intriguing,” she said on air. “I couldn’t control my feelings and I made it very aware to her that I liked her. Then when we were at the footy ball, I pashed her on the dance floor.”
Unfortunately, their relationship couldn’t stand the test of time, with Alex now revealing she wasn’t ready to commit.
“Everything was on fast forward,” she revealed. “It was super intense, passionate and beautiful. She proposed to me and at the time, I was madly in love with her so I said yes. But I think I freaked out and thought it was moving too quickly. I didn’t want to wake up one morning and be like, ‘this isn’t for me’. I said I needed to do this for myself and explore my sexuality.”
While the whole ordeal took Bachelor fans by surprise, Alex says her mum saw it coming from a mile away.
“She took me by surprise. I had never been with a woman romantically before, but when I told my mum that I was seeing a woman, she didn’t flinch,” Alex began. “She said that I used to say things when I was a little girl about my friends and how I didn’t know how I felt about them because they were girls.”
Now, Alex is ready to find love again and hopes she can do so in Paradise! I guess we will have to wait and see.
