Where asked by host Carson Daly how they first met, the future Mrs Carter said, “We met a long time ago. Awards shows, a lot of different performances.”

Daly also questioned the pair about rumours of a blossoming romance.

“You know, people, you see each other, and you respect each other’s music, there’s always that conversation,” said Jay Z, trying to downplay the rumours. “We oughta do something!’ [It’s] that time filler. When that time filler turns into something real, it’s music.”

The pair went on to marry in secret in 2008 during an intimate ceremony at Jay Z’s New York apartment and became first-time parents to daughter Blue Ivy in 2012.

Released on April 25, Lemonade debuted at number 1 on the ARIA albums chart and sent social media into a frenzy with accusations of Jay Z cheating on his wife because of harsh lyrics like “He better go call Becky with the good hair”,  an apparent reference to an affair.

Now on the road with her Formation World Tour, Beyonce put her own spin on the state of play by giving a shout-out to Jay Z before performing ‘Halo’ on the opening night on April 27.

“I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband,” she said. “I love you so much.”
