The star’s agent, Steve Kenis, confirmed the actor died on July 19 at his home in the Netherlands. His funeral took place in the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Born in the Netherlands, Rutger— who had a long-spanning career playing mostly villains— is best known for his role in the science fiction classic, Blade Runner (1982). The actor played the mysterious Roy Batty alongside Hollywood star Harrison Ford. He also starred in Ladyhawke and won a Golden Globe award in 1988 for his excellent performance in Escape from Sobibor.

Aside from his successful career in film, Hauer was a philanthropist, using his money and fame to help children and pregnant women with HIV and AIDS seek treatment through his not profit organisation, Starfish Association.
Tributes to the late star have since flooded in, with actors like Billy Dee Williams expressing their condolences.
“So sad to hear of Rutger Hauer’s passing. Working with this gentleman was a career highlight when we co-starred together in the 1981 movie #Nighthawks,” the Star Wars wrote on Twitter.
