Reese Witherspoon rarely misses when it comes to her book club picks. And any book she picks is almost guaranteed to become a best-seller.
Where the Crawdads Sing, Little Fires Everywhere and Daisy Jones & the Six were all on the end of the tastemaker’s Midas touch. And it seems that a book that finds its way on to Witherspoon’s must-read list, has a good chance of getting the movie treatment or a TV adaptation.
More often than not, Witherspoon’s book club pick features women as the leading characters, is inspiring and resonates in some way with her large contingent of female followers.
Thankfully, she’s started off 2025 with a book that sounds perfect for a “last days of summer” read.
And as we follow her choices throughout the year, let’s see which of her favourites become our favourites too.
January: The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan
Describes as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets First Lie Wins, The Three Lives of Cate Kay tells the story of an elusive bestselling author whose life is not what it seems.
Cate Kay is the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series. Now she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation.
But the thing is, Cate doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.
Cate has been on the run ever since she was a young adult. With stars in their eyes, she and her best friend Amanda were headed to California when a tragedy shattered their dreams. Since then she’s taken on different names and created a new life. But after a shocking revelation, Cate understands that returning home is the only way she’ll be a whole person again.
Witherspoon said she was “swept me away with its big dreams, love, and unexpected twists”.
