It’s the Bride and Prejudice family drama that has Australians entranced – but lesbian couple Ange and Dylan have a surprising message about Ange’s father John, who says he will never accept what he sees as their ‘sinful’ relationship.
While many viewers turned on John after his religiously-inspired condemnation of the couple’s relationship, Ange says that the haters are not really on her side, as she loves her father.
‘It’s hard,’ Ange told The Morning Show of the deluge of online derision that has targeted her dad. ‘I’ve told my dad not to look at all the comments.
‘I don’t want him to feel like he’s being ganged up on.’
While John clearly loves his daughter, he won’t tolerate her marrying Dylan – convinced that his fundamentalist interpretation of religion is correct. Fearing that his daughter will end up burning in hell, his views are not surprisingly failing to convince blissfully loved up and happy Ange that her relationship is ‘wrong’.
And she’s remarkably tolerant of her dad’s beliefs.
‘Everything he says, I understand why he says it and why he thinks it, but it so happens that I don’t believe the same things,’ she says.
Despite his strident views, many fans are beginning to warm to John – at least outside of his hellfire sermons – after his recent musical performance with Dylan.
