Veteran actor Bryan Brown was left slightly embarrassed on Monday evening when he turned up to the wrong film premiere.
Brown, 73, arrived at the Palace Verona Cinema in Paddington where the premiere for Be Here Now, the story of Andy Whitfield was taking place.
The film documents the cancer battle of the late actor who, although Welsh-born, made a name for himself starring in some of Australia’s best loved television shows including All Saints and Packed To The Rafters.
Smiling happily for the media wall it wasn’t until Bryan began asking for fellow actor Sam Neill that he realized Sam was not in the building.
Instead, Sam was at the nearby Palace Chauvel Cinema in Paddington promoting New Zealand production, Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Not one to shy away from sharing a light-hearted gag with the audience, Neill made it clear that his long-time friend almost didn’t make it to the premiere of his new movie.
“Well Bryan Brown turned up to the wrong premiere tonight,” Neill said during a post-screening Q&A, reported the Daily Telegraph.
According to a 2012 interview in The Australian, the pair first met at a Sydney party in 1979 shortly after Neill starred in My Brilliant Career. “You were impressed because I left with three girls”, recalled Neill, to which his dramatic sparring partner Brown replied, “Yeah, and I just couldn’t get a look-in, which you know has always been my problem compared to Sam. I mean, he’s such a ladies’ man.’’
Brown and Neill were born just 12 weeks apart, albeit in different countries and starred together in the ABC production Old School. The show saw the men playing a former cop and criminal who come together when they have a mutual interest.
