The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were appearing on A Berry Royal Christmas, which was aired in the UK on Monday, when the snub occurred.
In the festive BBC episode, Mary Berry who is fondly known as the ‘Queen of Cakes’ followed William and Kate, both 37, as they attended royal engagements with their respective organisations – which culminated in the baking legend helping them prepare a menu for a charity event.
Then, during a brief clip where the couple were chatting with volunteers in front of a roaring fire at the event, William placed his hand on Kate’s shoulder, and the Duchess seemingly shrugged it off, quickly moving body away from his.
Fans who were watching the TV show spotted the awkward moment, and took to Twitter to vent their thoughts.
“She moved with a quickness,” on fan commented on Twitter.
A second wrote: “Awkward! Too awkward!! They should have cut it out!”
Another fan noted: “Kate shaking off William’s hand on her shoulder during #ABerryRoyalChristmas.”
“What just happened here???? Ouch!” wrote another fan.
Meanwhile, other royal watchers defended the Duchess of Cambridge’s actions and pointed out it wasn’t an appropriate moment for PDA.
“I like the way they interact, it’s professional. I don’t want to see excessive hand holding and back rubbing. It’s awkward, like you’re intruding on a private moment,” commented one.
Another agreed: “Why can’t people just be content with the fact that she didn’t feel a PDA was appropriate at that moment/at that event. It wasn’t about them, it was about all the volunteers.”
Fans were left in hysterics at another point in the show when Mary Berry asked Kate Middleton if she wanted to have “a squirt on a cake”.
Giggling, Kate replied: “Can you show me how to do it first?”
