Dan Ewing used to believe that working in Hollywood would be the pinnacle of his acting career. That was, until he moved his then wife Marni and son Archer, now 2, to Los Angeles in 2014 and discovered it wasn’t the upbringing he wanted for his son.
“The States is a bit of a mess, as we can all see,” the actor, best known to Australian audiences for his role as Heath Braxton on Home and Away, tells WHO. “I feel [children] are relatively safer here, which is important because I’ve turned into a big softie after having Archie.”
“Plus, Archie has both sets of grandparents still alive on my side and I started to think, ‘Am I being selfish keeping that away from him?’ For a lot of actors, it’s all about going to LA. But we live in the best country in the world here and I want my little boy to grow up here.”
Ewing, 31, returned home and although his time in the US ultimately cost him his marriage, it’s only strengthened his career. He’s the star of new Australian sci-fi thriller, Red Billabong (in cinemas now), and is shooting scenes for Home and Away. Ewing credits his success to his son, who he affectionately calls BamBam.
“He’s made me a better actor,” he says. “I think it’s because I’m way less egotistical. I don’t say I was a big, arrogant jerk before, but now there is less bravado, less bullshit. He makes me more real. He’s just a complete gift.”
