Over the over Labor Day weekend, David Bowie was finally laid to rest at the annual festival.
According to tells E! News the late singer’s wife Iman gave the singer’s godchild permission to take a portion of his ashes, as the two had a special connection to the often-spiritual event.
“David’s godchild and David had long talks about Burning Man and what it stands for, and David loved the message behind it,” reveals the source.
Bowie, who passed in January of this year after an 18-month battle with liver cancer, was honoured with a ceremony of 70 people at the Temple, a huge structure erected for Burning Man attendees to memorialise their loved ones.
An eyewitness told E! News, “We played [David’s] music the entire drive from our camp to the Temple and back,” adding, “Most of us had the Bowie [lightning bolt] face paint on in his honour.”
At the end of the week-long event, the Temple is burnt to the ground like most of Burning Man’s many art installations and structures.
On Sept. 7 Iman, 61, attended her first event since losing her longtime love at New York Fashion Week. The supermodel paid tribute to her partner of over 20 years with a silver necklace spelling “David.” As she told Good Morning America’s Joe Zee, she has no plans to take it off.
“I’m wearing this until my death,” she told him. “[Fashion designer] Hedi Slimane made it for me.”
