David Schwimmer has opened up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about the pressures of being an actor on a hit TV show.
The 49-year-old, who played Ross Gellar in TV’S Friends, acknowledges, that he knew the sitcom was a hit series, “I was very aware of the power of the success of the show.” Schwimmer admits.
Speaking of stardom, Schwimmer said, “It was pretty jarring and it messed with my relationship to other people in a way that took years, I think, for me to adjust to and become comfortable with.
“The effect of celebrity was the absolute opposite: it made me want to hide under a baseball cap and not be seen. I realised that after a while I was no longer watching people; I was trying to hide.”
Schwimmer also revealed that it hindered his ability to do his job properly. “As an actor, the way I was trained, my job was to observe life and to observe other people, so I used to walk around with my head up, really engaged and watching people,” he said.
The Friends alumni worked on the sitcom for ten years, from 1994 to 2004, alongside Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston and by the end was earning more than $1 million an episode.
