However, in an in depth interview with Refinery29, Demi has opened up about her life before and after she decided to go sober.

The 23-year-old relayed her struggles from her past, describing how her decision to get clean involved a lot of big changes.

“Prior to getting sober, I was one of those people who was like, I don’t give a f**k, whatever,” she adds. “And I used that as an excuse to do whatever I wanted. I was a nightmare to work with.”

Demi, who at her lowest couldn’t go longer than an hour with cocaine said, “I had to learn the hard way that I can’t do parties anymore”. “Some people can go out and not be triggered, but that’s not the case for me.”

She entered rehab in 2011 after punching dancer Alex Welch on a tour with the Jonas Brothers. At the time Alex claimed that Demi, “pulled the dancers in a room and threatened: “If I find out who told on me…”

Rumours had been circulating in the press of her drug usage.

‘We were on the plane with the Jonases having this awesome time and I didn’t get a call or text from Demi or a “Hey, you got a problem with me,” nothing. And she walks up and punches me and literally walked away and got in her seat.’ Alex told the Daily Mail.

Lovato also told Refinery29 that she had to stop herself from watching the award-winning documentary Amy, because it featured scenes of Amy Winehouse taking drugs.  She said, “It’s too triggering. If I feel even 1% unsure that I’m in a place where I can watch it, then I just don’t do it.”

Demi celebrated four years of sobriety in March. It is well known that sobriety is a life-long battle, but Demi is full of determination and continues to inspire young fans with her honesty.

Despite the 2011 tour incidents and failed relationship with Joe Jonas, her friendship with Nick continues to go from strength to strength. The pair are embarking on a 34-stop, Future Now tour starting in June in Atlanta. Jonas and Lovato made headlines when they cancelled their North Carolina leg of the tour over the HB2 laws.

In a joint statement released on twitter the duo said, “One of our goals for the tour has always been to create an atmosphere where every single attendee feels equal, included, and accepted for who they are.”

In addition to sobriety, Demi also addressed her relationship with Wilmer Valderrama. Whilst she revealed last year that she would say, “Yes” if Wilmer ever proposed, she also stated, “It’s nobody’s business but ours, and when it happens, it happens”.

The couple met at a photo shoot in 2010 and Demi credits Wilmer with helping her through some of her toughest times. She even wrote a touching instagram tribute to the actor on her 3rd anniversary of being sober.

” I wish I could put into words how grateful I am for this man right here. But my love has grown to a level that words could never possibly express how much this man completes me. He’s loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober… After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery… he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. I really wouldn’t be alive today without him. I love you Wilmer”
