The Block is barely underway, but one team is already threatening to pack up its power tools and leave.
During Sunday night’s episode, Chantel and Wyatt were stunned when Scotty Cam announced they had spent $20,700 on their guest bedroom — despite the couple believing their total was closer to $12,500.
The discrepancy left them desperately trying to work out where the additional money had gone and what the incorrect figure suggested about their honesty.
However, when they attempted to dispute the calculation, Chantel and Wyatt claimed their concerns were repeatedly dismissed by Scotty and senior members of production.
By Monday night’s episode, the couple were proven right: they hadn’t spent more than $20,000, and an error had been made while calculating their expenses.
But by the time the mistake was uncovered, the situation had already erupted into one of the season’s most heated confrontations.
Feeling dismissed and increasingly distrustful of production, Chantel and Wyatt questioned whether they wanted to remain in the competition at all.
Now, speaking exclusively to WHO, the couple have explained why the incorrect figure left them feeling as though their integrity was being sacrificed for reality TV drama.
How did The Block get Chantel and Wyatt’s budget wrong?
Following Sunday night’s room reveal, Scotty presented the teams with a breakdown comparing their proposed budgets with what they had actually spent.
Chantel and Wyatt were told their guest bedroom had cost $20,700 — $8200 above the amount they had calculated themselves.
“I was actually a bit confused; we’d spent $12,500,” Chantel told WHO. “So $20,000 is a big difference.”
With thousands of dollars seemingly unaccounted for, the couple began trying to work out how their total had climbed so dramatically.
“We were trying to rattle through our heads why it was like that and what could have been going on,” she said. “We just felt a bit uneasy, I guess.”
The discrepancy also left them wondering what production believed had happened to the money. Had they simply made a monumental budgeting mistake, or was there a suggestion that the missing thousands had been used dishonestly?
Either way, it wasn’t the sort of question they were willing to let hang in the air.
“Yeah, there’s a lot of distrust,” admitted Chantel.
During Monday night’s episode, production reviewed the expenses and confirmed that the original $20,700 figure was incorrect.
Chantel and Wyatt had been right about their spending all along.
However, for the couple, the damage had already been done. Their biggest frustration wasn’t simply that someone had made an error — it was that nobody initially appeared willing to consider they might be telling the truth.
Wyatt says the couple tried to speak up
According to Wyatt, the pair challenged the figure as soon as it was announced on Sunday night, but their concerns were quickly put on hold.
“As soon as we were there and they ran out the budgeting and called us out, we sort of spoke up then,” he told WHO.
“He [Scotty] sort of shut it down and said, ‘We’ll speak about it tomorrow.’ We tried to speak up on multiple occasions.”
After leaving the room reveal, Chantel and Wyatt approached the show’s finance team in the hope of getting an explanation.
“We tried to speak to the head of finance and they shut us down,” Wyatt claimed.
The couple then took their concerns to Jules, the head of production, but Wyatt said he was assured the $20,700 figure had been personally checked and was correct.
“He also reassured us that he had seen the numbers himself, that we did spend [more than] $20,000, and didn’t want to hear it,” said Wyatt.
Essentially, Chantel and Wyatt knew the maths wasn’t mathing, but couldn’t convince anyone else to reach for a calculator.
As their attempts to clear up the discrepancy continued to hit a wall, their confusion quickly turned into anger.
Why did Chantel and Wyatt react so strongly?
Wyatt insisted their reaction wasn’t solely about money. He felt that the couple had been denied the opportunity to defend themselves after their integrity was called into question on national television.
“I don’t care about what anyone’s stature or position is,” he said.
“I feel like everyone deserves the same rights and to be able to be valued, respected and listened to.”
For Wyatt, Scotty’s position as the host of The Block didn’t mean the couple’s concerns deserved any less consideration.
“I don’t care if you’re the Queen or if you’re myself; everyone deserves the same time of day, in my opinion,” he continued.
“The fact that we didn’t get that was a little bit frustrating.”
“A little bit frustrating” may be underselling the scenes that followed, but Monday night’s discovery confirmed that Chantel and Wyatt had been right to question the total.
Did Chantel and Wyatt leave The Block?
After feeling dismissed by production and wrongly accused of blowing their budget, the couple seriously questioned whether they wanted to continue on the show.
“I don’t feel like I want to stay,” Chantel said during Sunday night’s episode.
“No, me either. I don’t want to be here,” Wyatt agreed.
However, after the calculation error was uncovered, Scotty and Jules sat down with the couple and offered them a sincere apology.
The gesture appeared to reassure Chantel and Wyatt that production understood why the mistake — and the way their concerns were initially handled — had affected them so deeply.
Following the conversation, the pair decided to remain in the competition and continue renovating their house.
So, the tools aren’t being packed away just yet.
While the missing $8200 has now been accounted for, only time will tell whether the apology was enough to fully rebuild Chantel and Wyatt’s trust in the people behind The Block.
