Offspring star Eddie Perfect does not mince words when it comes to the state of Australian theatre.
When WHO talked to the 38-year-old, who is currently touring his 2013 play The Beast in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, he revealed just how closely he relates to Mick, the character he has played since Offspring’s 2010 premiere.
“I don’t think Mick is a million miles away from me,” he says. “He spent most of the series being an unmotivated musician to all of a sudden getting international fame.”
Perfect dreams of the same—and because of his frustration with the local theatre scene (“I’m living in a country where the industry is disinterested in creating Australian content”), his wife Lucy Cochran told him to head overseas and try cracking the toughest market of them all: Broadway.
“I was very fortunate that Tim Minchin introduced me to his agent,” Perfect tells WHO. “Slowly I’m trying to get on the stage in New York. This is pie in the sky, but if ever won a Tony I would hold that f—king statue aloft, speak directly to Australian producers and say it is possible. We should be making our own musicals.”
