Popular Netflix series Firefly Lane is back in production for a second season, after the first made waves around the world.

Starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, the series followed the tight, three-decade-long friendship of their characters, Tully and Kate.

The 10-episode series left us on quite the cliff-hanger, with Tully quitting her major role in television, and a flash-forward depicting the end of their friendship over an unknown falling out.

However, it’s Aussie actor Ben Lawson who is providing our season two insight.

Ben stars as Johnny Ryan, Kate’s former husband, with whom she is currently in the process of divorcing.

His role in the show was also left on a cliff-hanger, with the audience seeing him fall victim to an improvised explosive device while reporting in Iraq. We were left unsure as to whether he lives or dies.

However, the flashback-heavy nature of the show means that Ben will be back either way, as seen in his most recent Instagram post.

“We’re back, wigger than ever,” he captioned a picture of himself and Sarah Chalke getting fitted with their wigs, which feature heavily in the flashbacks on the show.

Johnny became a favourite character among the Australian audience, mostly due to Ben being an Aussie native, and playing an Aussie on the show.

He demonstrated this by wearing a 1991 QLD Maroons Origin jersey on the show in a scene where he was just relaxing in comfy clothes.

The jersey was never addressed on the show – it just provided a fun Easter egg for all the Australians who had already become obsessed with Firefly Lane.

Ben has spoken a lot about his cliff-hanger ending, and has some hopes for season two.

“I don’t know exactly what the producers of the show are going to do, but I’d like to think Johnny is going to stick around a bit for a little while longer,” he told Glamour.

“I definitely think Johnny needs Kate. He needs that real, good, kindhearted, honest person to ground him,” he said of his on-screen relationship with Sarah Chalke’s Kate.

“Everyone wants a Kate Mularkey. That’s the person you marry and build a life with, but he has this other thing that he feels he was born to do and has never truly got to do. Still, I would like to see them together,” he explained.

As for whether his hopes will be fulfilled, we’ll be keen to find out when season two is released next year.
