The beloved prison-based drama has been commissioned for a further 20 episodes. This means that on top of season seven, an eighth and ninth season is in store, making the show Australia’s longest ever running drama series.
The announcement was made on December 5 at an event in Sydney, with cast members Susie Porter, Leah Purcell, Kate Atkinson, and Tammy MacIntosh in attendance.
“It really is a gift of a show,” Kate Atkinson, who plays Vera Bennett said.
“Wentworth has captivated audiences with its gritty nail-biting storylines, remarkable performances by an extensive ensemble cast and high production values,” Foxtel’s Executive Director of Television, Brian Walsh added. “The commissioning of these additional episodes will see it reach an extraordinary 100 episodes.”
Earlier this year, fans were left shocked when media outlets claimed the hit series was going to be canceled. However, we have now learned that season seven is currently in post-production and will screen in 2019.
The good news doesn’t stop there!
The television company also announced that season eight, which will be supported by Film Victoria, will commence production next year, meaning that it will most likely hit our screens in 2020!
A re-imagined version of the soap, ‘Prisoner’, ‘Wentworth’ has become one of televisions biggest success stories, being watched in more than 100 countries outside Australia. The series won three awards at this year’s Logies, including Outstanding Drama Series, Popular Drama Program and Outstanding Actress for Pamela Rabe, for her incredible performance as Joan Ferguson.
Season six aired in June of this year and introduced the characters Rita Connors (Purcell), Marie Winter (Porter) and Ruby Mitchell (Rarriwuy Hick).
In September, Robbie Magasiva confirmed that Porter, Purcell, and Hick will appear in season seven. And it sounds like we can expect plenty more drama!
“With Wentworth, there is always a surprise – and there will be plenty in season seven,” Magasiva said. “Wentworth never changes. It’s like you’re cruising along a highway and bang! You never expect it, but it hits you then takes a different direction. Hold on tight and expect the unexpected!”
Atkinson also commented on what lies ahead.
“It definitely starts with a very different tone [compared to the] beginning of season six, which was all sirens and escapes and prison in lockdown,” she said. “Vera is in an interesting situation. [It’s a] few months down the track from the end of season six. There [will be] a new psychologist, and there are a couple of new characters who join later in the season!”
It sounds like the prison is on the brink of imploding as the fiery confrontation between the two emerging titans, Rita and Marie, heats up!
