It’s official – Freaky Friday is finally getting a long-awaited sequel.

Speaking to Andy Cohen in March 2024, star Lindsay Lohan confirmed that work on the highly-anticipated reboot is officially underway, telling his SiriusXM show, “We’re both excited. I’m going to speak for Jamie.”

Sadly for fans, Lindsay didn’t share any updates on when we can expect the film to hit cinemas, saying, “I won’t say that yet. I don’t want to say too much.”

Lindsay’s latest update comes almost one year after The Hollywood Reporter first confirmed that a Freaky Friday sequel was in the works, with both Lindsay and co-star Jamie Lee Curtis returning to reprise their roles as Anna and Tess Coleman.

According to the publication, the latest instalment won’t stray too far from the original concept, with the storyline looking to expand upon the 1976, 1995, and 2003 film adaptations. The sequel will also bring on Elyse Hollander as screenwriter, with the film’s director and additional cast yet to be confirmed.

While we’re all excited to hear the latest news that the sequel is underway, it’s not the first time fans have heard whispers of a return to the iconic flick.

In 2022, Jaime Lee Curtis hinted that a sequel to the cult classic may be on the cards almost two decades after the film was originally released.

A firm favourite, the Disney movie was a remake of the original (and equally iconic) 1976 film of the same name and saw Curtis star opposite then-teen actress Lindsay Lohan, their characters famously swapping bodies on a rather freaky, but round hilarious Friday.

At the time of release, the 2003 remake grossed $160m worldwide and earned Curtis a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Curtis revealed during an appearance on the US talk show The View that she has routinely been pitching sequel ideas to Disney, and was hoping one day a second film would be made.

“I’ve already written to Disney, my friends at Disney,” Curtis said.  “Creatively I am wide open…Bring it”.

When pressed on what story fans could expect from a potential sequel, Curtis said she was keen to step into the role of a grandma.

“Let me be the grandma, let me be the old grandma who switches places,” Curtis said.

Curtis, now 65 to Lohan’s 37, also revealed that she is still in regular contact with her onscreen daughter, receiving a string of text messages from Lohan whilst in Mexico City during the promotion of Halloween Ends, her final reprisal of horror movie heroine Laurie Strode.

And it seems Curtis can’t put to rest those rumours of a sequel, previously revealing at the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery premiere that she would be on board to work with Lindsay again.

“There would be nothing I would love more, honestly, than to be able to work with her again, share our time again, and now be able to share it at this age with both of us 20 years older, or whatever we are,” Curtis, told People.

“We’re talking,” Curtis insists, when asked about the Freaky Friday sequel, “There’s a lot of good talk going on.”
