On Sept 19, the series scored the 2016 Emmy Award for outstanding drama series, presented by former N.Y.P.D. Blue stars Jimmy Smits and Dennis Franz. Game Of Thrones co-creator and showrunner David Benioff accepted the honour on behalf of the project.

“We’re standing up here because we have the best producers in the business. We have the best cast that I think has ever been assembled from Wales, England, Ireland, Scotland and from New Jersey,” said Benioff.

Screenwriter and executive producer D. B. Weiss added, “We’re standing up here because George R.R. Martin created the world we now play in.”

Game of Thrones was nominated along with The Americans, Downton Abbey, Better Call Saul, Mr. Robot and Homeland.

The series has officially won more Emmy awards than any primetime series in television history. Winning the gongs for Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Drama brings the show’s total to 38, which has surpassed it’s predecessor, NBC’s Frasier.
