American actor Gil Gerard, best known for his starring role as Captain William “Buck” Rogers in the cult classic science-fiction series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, has died at the age of 82.
His passing was confirmed by his wife, Janet Gerard, who shared that he lost his fight with a “rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer.”
“Early this morning Gil – my soulmate – lost his fight with a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer,” Janet wrote.
“From the moment when we knew something was wrong to his death this morning was only days. No matter how many years I got to spend with him it would have ever been enough.
“Hold the ones you have tightly and love them fiercely.”
Gerard’s portrayal of the charismatic space hero made him a household name when Buck Rogers first aired in 1979. The series ran for two seasons and became a defining role in his long career.
Gerard’s career spanned decades, with roles in other television series, movies and even appearances at fan conventions celebrating his sci-fi legacy. Beyond Buck Rogers, he appeared in films such as Airport ’77 and continued to work into later years.
In a heartfelt message prepared before his death, Gerard reflected on his life’s journey, calling it “an amazing journey” and urging fans not to “waste your time on anything that doesn’t thrill you or bring you love.”
In the letter, he wrote: “My life has been an amazing journey. The opportunities I’ve had, the people I’ve met and the love I have given and received have made my 82 years on the planet deeply satisfying.
“My journey has taken me from Arkansas to New York to Los Angeles, and finally, to my home in North Georgia with my amazing wife, Janet, of 18 years.”
He added: “It’s been a great ride, but inevitably one that comes to a close as mine has,” advising fans not to waste “time on anything that doesn’t thrill you or bring you love,” before signing off: “See you out somewhere in the cosmos.”
He is survived by Janet and his son, Gilbert Vincent Gerard, from a previous marriage.
