It’s hard to imagine a world where the Monterey five aren’t covering their tracks, keeping secrets and conspiring against Mary Louise Wright. But according to HBO, we need to get used to the idea because it looks like Big Little Lies isn’t being renewed for a third season.

Network president Casey Bloys told TVLine that a follow-up season is “not realistic” seeing as the star-studded cast have upcoming projects they’ve already committed to.

“I love this group of people — I would do anything with them,” Bloys said. “But the reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. We have deals with some of them — Nicole [Kidman] is doing her next show [The Undoing] with us. I just think it’s not realistic.”

He continued: “Look, if they all came to me and said, ‘We worked out all of our schedules!’ – then sure. But I just don’t think it’s realistic. … Season 2 was a chance for everyone involved to end [the franchise] in a way that feels satisfying.”

Although this may come as a shock to some BLL fans, at the Television Critics Association tour earlier this year, the show’s writer David E. Kelley hinted that season two would spell the end for Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Meryl Streep, Zoe Kravitz and Laura Dern’s characters.

“[There’s] no such plan now,” Kelley said. “We like our closure at season 2, that will probably be it.”

Kidman also confirmed earlier this year that HBO hadn’t given the green light for another season.

“There’s no plan for it. This was a long shoot for us, an enormous amount of work, we’re amazed we can be here,” said the beloved Australian actress who’s married to Keith Urban.
