Hey Wildcats, your first look at the much-anticipated HSM TV series titled High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is finally here!
WATCH: Former Disney star Miley Cyrus belts out her favourite High School Musical tracks… including Breaking Free!
The upcoming spinoff— which you can binge-watch on the Disney+ streaming service in November— will feature an entirely new cast and will consist of ten episodes. As expected, the docu-style series will follow a group of students at East High who are preparing for their winter theatre production. Each episode will include a series of our favourite renditions from the three films, along with a few new tunes we’ll be able to belt out at karaoke.
“Doing theatre is all about finding your tribe,” creator and showrunner Tim Federle told PEOPLE. “I can’t wait till the world meets the crazy-talented new tribe. There aren’t a lot of writers who get to launch a new streaming platform like Disney+. It’s a privilege to create a love letter to fans of the original High School Musical movies while also making an irreverent, feel-good musical for a new generation.”
While doing the press rounds with Lily Collins in February for his Ted Bundy film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, Zac Efron— who played the teenage heartthrob Troy Bolton in the beloved flicks— said he’d love to feature in the series!
“Absolutely,” he said when asked if he’d star in the new series later this year. “I don’t see why not.”
Despite the hype around the upcoming show, Efron said he didn’t even know there was a series coming our way… how rude!
“I’m not, like, committing to it — I didn’t know there was [a series]. That message still resonates to this day.”
