Nine weeks into our 12-Week Challenge, some candidates have hit the plateau stage–when weight-loss stalls during a weight-loss program—which, in turn, affects motivation. “Peaks and troughs in motivation are normal,” says weight loss hypnotherapist Avril Carpenter, who suggests five ways to get back on track.
COMPARISON IS A NO-WIN GAME
“If the scale isn’t budging for you (yet), and you’re feeling frustrated by other people’s successes, don’t use it as an excuse to quit! You have no idea what their journey is about … Remember, losing weight is not a race.”
CELEBRATE OTHERS’ SUCCESSES
“By celebrating other people’s successes, you get to share in their delight … you’re rehearsing your own happy dance for when your time comes.”
PEER POWER
“If you’re plateauing, notice who you’re hanging with. It’s important to spend time with like-minded friends with similar health goals. Are you hanging out with friends who are physically active and emotionally support and encourage you?”
REWARD YOURSELF
“Rewards train your mind to associate your new habits with pleasure instead of drudgery. But before you head for the fridge, make it a non-food reward! For instance, treat yourself to a music download after achieving your exercise goals for the week.”
FOCUS ON THE SMALL WINS
“Every long-term achievement is built on a series of small wins that add up to radical change over time. So when the scales don’t move, focus on small wins like, ‘At least my jeans are feeling looser.’ By doing this you’ll keep your momentum topped up which is your fuel for the weight loss journey.
