Directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman and its upcoming sequel) and starring Chris Pine, I Am the Night sounds great on paper.
A biracial schoolgirl (India Eisley) who discovers all she’s been told about her past isn’t true. A disgraced journalist (Pine) with a drug habit. A wealthy doctor (Jefferson Mays) with links to the infamous Black Dahlia murder. There are certainly enough elements here for an intriguing noir, but this six-parter sure takes its time to set up its story.
Even once 16-year-old Fauna Hodel leaves her small town and heads to LA for answers, those aren’t exactly forthcoming. Superficially pleasing – the period elements are its best feature – I Am the Night lacks the substance it so desperately needs. (On Stan from Tues., Jan. 29) 2.5 stars
