Just after Australian entrant Dami Im came an unprecedented second in the Eurovision music competition, it has been revealed that the Ukrainian winners may not have used an entirely new song.
Ukraine’s Jamala sang a controversial song titled 1944. Whilst the song was nearly disqualified for its political subject, it may have actually breached another of the competitions rules. Videos from 3 years ago have surfaced of the song being performed in public, which is against Eurovision rules.
Eurovision fans around the world have been expressing their disappointment with the competitions decision to allow Ukraine to keep its title. Some have even been calling for Ukraine’s entry to be disqualified allowing first place to be award to Dami Im.
Eurovision organisers have since defended their decision.
They said the “The video of a small concert had only been viewed by a few hundred people before it was discovered in the past few days,”
“The EBU, based on previous decisions in the Reference Group, therefore has concluded that the published video did not give Jamala’s song any unfair advantage in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and the song was eligible to compete.”
