On the career front, her new album, Hilda (out Fri., Oct. 18), is her first non-soundtrack release since 2013’s Beautiful, with every song, including emotional latest single ‘Little Things’, co-written by the 30-year-old.

Personally, the singer is entering a new phase of her life, after she long-time boyfriend Themeli Magripilis announced are engaged.

The timing is not a coincidence, with the completion of Hilda allowing Mauboy to shift focus.

“Having kids and getting married is something I can visualise, but it’s hard when you’re so deep in the creative process,” she reflects. “You just want to give every part of you to the project.”

They’re engaged!

‘Little Things’ is very personal, isn’t it?
It was one of the last ones that went on the record. It was a bit of a tug-of-war with it because it was so personal. It really holds
a piece of my family – mostly my mother. ‘Little Things’ was a reflection of not being home enough; not telling my family that they’re enough. The little things are to call them up and say how beautiful they are. So, missing those moments. I’ve never really tapped into that side and reflected in that way before. I’ve sung about my own relationships with my partner or other people’s relationships. But I’d never really tapped into them.

How did your family react to the song?
It was really quiet. I’ve never seen my family be so quiet. It was as if they were really embracing it, because it’s part of their story.

You and Themeli have been together for years. Have your families been pressuring you to get married and start a family? My sisters always say, “When are we going to have a little Jess or little Themeli running around?”.

And Them’s parents are getting much older and they’re like, “When are you going to have a baby? I want to have a little grandson or granddaughter.”

They’re freaking me out!
