It’s been 15 years since Pearl Harbor was released on Memorial Day 2001. The blockbuster went on to make more than $500 million dollars and in 2013 was the third highest grossing romantic drama of all time after Titanic and Ghost.
The war film made superstars out of the three leads, Ben Affleck, Josh Harnett and Kate Beckinsale. However, Kate has revealed that director Michael Bay wasn’t her biggest fan.
In an interview with Graham Norton over the weekend, Kate, 42, told the couch, including Matt LeBlanc and Emilia Clarke, that she was cast because director Bay did not think she was particularly attractive.
“I think he was baffled by me because my boobs weren’t bigger than my head and I wasn’t blonde,” she said.
When casting commenced, Kate was told to lose weight as she had just given birth to daughter Lily Mo Sheen.
According to Kate, while on the press junket, Bay repeatedly told the audience she got the part of nurse Lt Evelyn Johnson because she “wasn’t so attractive that she would alienate the female audience.”
These sentiments were echoed in a 2001 interview with Movieline, in which Bay said,
“I didn’t want someone who was too beautiful. Women feel disturbed when they see someone’s too pretty.”
It’s not the first time a female star has fought with Bay. Megan Fox famously likened the director to a dictator on the set of Transformers, although the two have since reconciled and worked together on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2014.
