Much has been made of The Morning Show host’s relationship with her work hubby, Larry Emdur, but behind the scenes, Gillies has a real hubby too.
And, married in 1989, it’s a partnership which has really stood the test of time.
Who did Kylie Gillies marry?
Kylie, 57, is married to Tony Gillies, the former editor in chief of newswire AAP.
The journalist couple met when they were both working as cadets for a local newspaper in Tamworth and married soon after.
Because Kylie was just 22, the newly weds decided to focus on their careers before starting a family.
“If we had kids earlier in our marriage, I don’t know if we would have been ready. It’s not about you anymore, so you need to be really happy and together and love each other to death or the wheels come off,” she told Good Health & Medicine .
There were hiccups when they started trying and Gillies shared with Good Health & Medicine that she endured two miscarriages.
But, after waiting 14 years, Kylie and Tony welcomed their first son Gus in 2002, and then their youngest, Archie, two years later.
How long have Kylie and Tony Gillies been married?
In May Kylie and Tony celebrated a milestone 35 years married.
“Maybe it’s luck. Maybe it’s your ability to tolerate. Maybe I have a high tolerance. But it’s also choosing the right person. He is a good person. We have a shared outlook on life,” she said to Mamamia talking about her long relationship.
To mark the occasion Kylie dusted off a photo from three decade before showing her and Tony when they first met.
“My Aunty Maree found this pic in a shoebox and sent it to me a few weeks back,” she wrote alongside it.
“I THINK it was the Christmas Tony and I got engaged. Well, today is our 35TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!”
“I’ve lost the perm and learned how to better apply blush. Tony never had a perm, it just looked like it! And he no longer has the shirt. Miami Vice called and wanted it back…Happy Anniversary Tone x”
While Kylie doesn’t share much about her relationship on her socials, she also posted a rare snapshot into their love story the year before.
To mark their 34 year anniversary Kylie shared a carousel of goofy photos and videos on Instagram from a boat ride back in 2021.
“34 years married today. Jeez. I went looking for pics and came across these. From 2021. And I think the sequence sums up our marriage pretty well,” she wrote.
“Me. Phaffing around. Adding colour and movement. And just being generally annoying. And Tony. Calm, steadfast, steering the ship. Confident and keeping us safe,” she said.
“After 34 years we’re carrying a few barnacles darl, but I reckon we still make good shipmates. Happy Anniversary. (I was going to say something about smooth sailing but anyone who’s married knows it can’t always be that),” she finished.
How many kids does Kylie Gillies have?
Kylie has two boys and when they were little she spoke of never sitting down.
“I’m blessed with good health and I run on nervous energy. I’m always on the move,” she told Good Health & Medicine .
Given her early work schedule which saw her out the door at 5:40 the family had nannies to help but the family always made a point to always eat dinner around the table together, Fridays ending with a movie night. But when the teenage years hit, those shared moments at home became less common and now the Gus and Archie are 21 and 19, all that feels a world away.
The empty nest
Now Kylie and Tony’s biggest problem is dealing with the feeling of an empty nest, something Gillies said she has been dreading for years.
“If I could have my time again … Gosh, I wish I could have my time again,” she told Australian Women’s Weekly
Gus is currently travelling around the world and Archie is on the way out too. He’s currently at university but is keen to follow in his older brother’s footsteps afterwards.
“I’m slowly figuring it out. You feel like you’re going insane, you feel clingy and needy. I do think I hold on too tight. I was speaking to one of my other mum friends and she said she had felt the same thing,” Kylie told Mamamia.
But Kylie knows she has a good support in Tony and said that even without the kids around their family is rock solid.
“I think we’ve found our rhythm. We were married for 13 years before we had Gus, so I think we were in a pretty good rhythm before we had kids. And now that they are abandoning us? We have a shared love of Netflix and coffee – that goes a long way in a relationship!” she said.
“We have simple demands of each other, and that is to like the same TV shows and drink the same coffee. So I think we’ve got it made.”
