Lena Dunham is the latest celebrity to critique Kanye West’s controversial new music video for “Famous.”
In a lengthy Facebook post on June 27, the Girls star, 30, blasted the clip, which shows an orgy of 12 naked celebrities sleeping together, as “disturbing” and an “attack on women.”
Dunham said she found the rapper’s latest creative contribution hard to look at, because of how women she admires—including Taylor Swift, Anna Wintour and Rihanna—are depicted.
“Now I have to see the prone, unconscious, waxy bodies of famous women, twisted like they’ve been drugged and chucked aside at a rager?” she wrote. “It gives me such a sickening sense of dis-ease.”
Continued the actress, “I don’t have a hip cool reaction, because seeing a woman I love like Taylor Swift (f*** that one hurt to look at, I couldn’t look), a woman I admire like Rihanna or Anna, reduced to a pair of waxy breasts made by some special effects guy in the Valley, it makes me feel sad and unsafe and worried for the teenage girls who watch this and may not understand that grainy roving camera as the stuff of snuff films.”
While Dunham, who has previously posed naked in Girls as her character Hannah Horvath, acknowledged West, 39, is “cool”, she pleaded with him not to objectify women by making them “feel unsafe even in their own beds, in their own bodies.”
Despite slamming the video in the post, Dunham also made mention of the fact that she “admires” the whole Kardashian/West clan and usually loves “the way they depict women as better in numbers and masters of their own destiny.”
Since West unveiled the NSFW clip for “Famous” at the Forum in Inglewood, California on June 24 it has angered many.
Singer Ray J, who previously dated West’s wife Kim Kardashian West and appears naked in the clip next to his ex, also commented on the video, describing it to Entertainment Tonight as “not cool” and “crazy.”
But West has maintained the video is not intended to be against anyone, but merely a comment on fame, telling Vanity Fair, “It’s not in support or anti any of [the people in the video], it’s a comment on fame.”
