Lisa Wilkinson’s broken wrist will take a year to recover

She said her doctors in Italy need 'training desperately'.

Lisa Wilkinson says her broken wrist will take 12 months to recover because doctors in Italy weren’t properly trained to deal with the fracture.

The host of Today says the medical professionals ‘strangled’ her arm when they put the cast on, leaving it in an ‘S-bend’ which has contributed to nerve damage.

‘The Italian doctors didn’t charge me a cent,’ she said in an interview with Confidential, ‘but God I wish they had because that would mean that money would be going into the Italian hospital system, I walked into the hospital and it was like walking into a building in Beirut.

‘They need training desperately because they put a cast on that has basically strangled my arm so most of my issues now are shocking nerve damage. The doctor said it will be 12 months before I can get back to what I could do before the injury.’

The 57-year-old broke her arm in two places after falling on a wet bathroom floor while on holiday in Italy.

Wilkinson had a fibreglass cast up until last week, which has been replaced by a splint.

She says despite the help of her patient husband, Peter Fitzsimons, who helps dress her and drives her to work, she still gets frustrated by the injury.

‘I burst into tears one day because I was trying to cut an avocado and I couldn’t do it,’ she revealed.
