Even the idea of skimpy jungle fashion to play Jane Porter in new movie The Legend of Tarzan didn’t inspire Gold Coast actress Margot Robbie to put gruelling workouts high on her priority list during filming.
While her co-star Alexander Skarsgard, 39 was shredding in the gym to play the King of the Jungle, Robbie, 25, was more interested in swinging on a different kind of vine.
“A good friend of mine was the trainer on the film set. He was doing his absolute best to keep me in line and get in shape. I was a naughty school kid. I would just run off and go to the pub,” the former Neighbours star told Total Film.
“He would be like, ‘Margot, what’s the point of this workout?’ I was like, ‘It’s the 19th century. If she’s got a bit of weight on her, it was probably a good thing.”
The 19th century British aristocracy, of which fictional Jane Porter is a member, was known for their love of indulgent sweets, taking the lead from Queen Victoria, namesake of the Victoria Sponge.
This isn’t the first time Robbie has regaled fans with her love for pub food. “I don’t have a very good diet,” she told UK magazine GQ in 2014. “I love beer, fries, burgers, but if I have to get in a bikini then I eat carrot sticks for three days.”
Added the Wolf of Wall Street star, “ I’m one extreme or the other. I’m not good at doing moderation. I get miserable if I don’t eat. I can’t just have a salad every day and half a glass of wine every second day. Can’t do it.”
When it comes to Hollywood’s attitudes to the female shape, Robbie is as headstrong as her femme fatale characters. “I’m not going to look thin just for the sake of it,” she told Total Film. “So yes, I was very defiant for selfish reasons. I just wanted to go everywhere and try every pub!”
