On-screen, David Cannon acted like he wasn’t bothered when he discovered his Married At First Sight wife, Hayley Vernon, had secretly hooked up with Michael Goonan during a boozy night out.

However, it turns out the truck driver was, in fact, deeply affected by her actions, with rumours swirling he had a massive breakdown behind the scenes. An insider recently revealed to New Idea that the groom had to be on 24/7 watch in his room because producers seriously feared what he’d do if he was left alone.

As per the source, he was “pushed to the edge” as his hatred for the bodybuilder grew, leaving him no choice but to take a step back and reassess whether he wanted to continue participating in the experiment.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard he struggled while filming, with the reality star confirming last month that he was the reason behind the executive producers’ decision to shut the show down for two weeks.
“The truth was, I was at the verge of a mental breakdown, I had been spoken to like a piece of sh*t for several weeks, so they put me in a separate apartment and we agreed upon some terms about how I was going to move forward,” David said on news.com.au’s Not Here To Make Friends podcast.
He continued: “We agreed that whatever Hayley said, I would be allowed to leave … That’s what happened in the two weeks of shut down, coming to that agreement.”

David also said they were forced to go back to the drawing board after the contestants’ “storylines had deviated or gone off the rails”.
“There was that much stuff that happened off-camera that wasn’t captured in the moment so production had to have multiple meetings and work out where everyone’s storyline is, because a lot of storylines had deviated or gone off the rails,” Michael admitted.
“People being in each other’s rooms, people going out together, people going out to bars together. You’ve got all these storylines of people being with other groups interacting with each other, mostly just as friends. (But) remember, it’s like being in a jail cell for three months, you’re gonna want to knock on Bubba’s room next door and go out for a few.”

Although David has publicly claimed he had already ditched the recovered drug addict when she pashed Michael, an insider claims he exploded at the businessman and even threatened to hit him.
“The morning David found out Michael had hooked up with his wife Hayley the night before, he was absolutely ropeable and he went and confronted him about it,” the source told New Idea.
“David is a huge guy, he’s twice the size of Michael and he’s a professional boxer, too – he’s not someone you would want to have an argument with.”

After stern words were exchanged, things took a turn for the worse with the argument becoming so heated, MAFS execs were forced to step in and separate them.
“The producers had trouble pulling him off Michael so one of the girls started yelling out to call the police, but the producers managed to shut the whole thing down.”
After the grooms cooled off and David finally calmed down, he did a piece to camera saying, “I’m really angry right now. I’m going to stay in my room because if I see Michael again, I will punch his lights out and he will be a pile of dust.”
Despite clearly being in the wrong and doing the dirty on David, Michael was so shaken up by the confrontation that producers decided to send him to a hotel in Paramatta for a few days.
“They never had any security guards at the dinner parties, but after that incident, they brought them in at every one,” the source added.
